1) What is the name of India’s nuclear-capable cruise missile developed with indigenous technology by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that was successfully test fired on 17 October 2014? – ‘Nirbhay’

Explanation: The test was conducted from the Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. Nirbhay’s first test was conducted on 12 March 2013 but it had to be terminated in the middle as it deviated from its course about 20 minutes after launch. So the 17 October launch became its first fully successful launch. Nirbhay (which means fearless) is very manoeuvrable and can fly at tree-top level, making it difficult to detect on radar, and strikes targets more than 700 km away carrying nuclear warheads, giving India the capability to strike deep into enemy territory. Unlike other ballistic missiles like the Agni, Nirbhay has a wing and pronounced tail fins. It launches like a missile and in early flight the small wings get deployed. It then flies like an aircraft and can even hover near the target, striking at will from any direction.

विस्तार: ‘निर्भय’ का विकास रक्षा अनुसंधान एवं विकास संगठन (DRDO) ने किया है

तथा इसका यह परीक्षण ओडीशा के चांदीपुर स्थित एकीकृत मिसाइल परीक्षण रेंज

(IMTR) से किया गया। इस मिसाइल ने अपने अपेक्षित निशाने को प्रक्षेपण के कुछ समय बाद सही तरह से भेद दिया। निर्भय बहुत कम ऊँचाई पर उड़ कर 700 किमी दूर तक के अपने निशाने को भेद सकता है जिसके कारण इसे रडार पर पकड़ना मुश्किल होता है। शुरू में यह एक मिसाइल की तरह से प्रक्षेपित होता है लेकिन बाद में एक विमान की तरह से उड़ता है। यह अमेरिका के “टोमाहॉक” और पाकिस्तान के “बाबर” की टक्कर का है। उल्लेखनीय है कि भारत ने “निर्भय” का पहला परीक्षण 12 मार्च 2013 को किया था लेकिन अपने निर्देशित पथ से भटकने के कारण इसके परीक्षण को रास्ते में ही रोक दिया गया था। इस प्रकार यह परीक्षण “निर्भय” का पहला पूर्ण सफल परीक्षण है।

2) Which Latin American country on 16 October 2014 launched its first-ever domestically built satellite named ARSAT-1? – Argentina

Explanation: ARSAT-1 is the first satellite to be constructed with local technology in Latin America. It was built by a crew of about 500 scientists over seven years at a cost of $250 million. The satellite was launched from a base in French Guyana on 16 October and is to orbit 36,000 kilometers above Earth. ARSAT-1 has been designed to provide digital television and cell phone services to Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay for the next 15 years.

2) किस दक्षिण अमेरिकी देश द्वारा स्वदेशी तकनीक से निर्मित पहले उपग्रह आरसैट-1 (ARSAT-1) का सफल प्रक्षेपण 16 अक्टूबर 2014 को किया गया? – अर्जेन्टीना
विस्तार: ARSAT-1 किसी दक्षिण अमेरिकी (लैटिन अमेरिकी) देश द्वारा पूर्णतया स्वदेशी तकनीक से निर्मित पहला उपग्रह है। इसके विकास में लगभग 25 करोड़ डॉलर का खर्च हुआ तथा 500 वैज्ञानिकों की टीम ने अपना योगदान दिया। इसका सफल प्रक्षेपण फ्रैंच गुआना (French Guyana) स्थित प्रक्षेपण स्थल से किया गया तथा इसके बाद इस उपग्रह को कुछ देर बाद पृथ्वी की कक्षा में स्थापित कर दिया गया। ARSAT-1 का उपयोग अर्जेन्टीना, चिली, पराग्वे और उरुग्वे में अगले 15 साल के लिए डिज़िटल टीवी और मोबाइल फोन सेवाओं के लिए किया जायेगा।

3) What is the name of the revamped version of Google’s Android software that was unveiled by the company on 15 October 2014? – “Lollipop”

Explanation: “Lollipop” or Android 5.0, is the upgraded operating system for mobile phones. The company claimed that with Android Lollipop the songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all Android devices. Google also unveiled its Nexus 6 series of smartphones mainly to compete against Apple, which launched two upgraded large-screen iPhones during September 2014.

3) गूगल (Google) के नए विकसित एण्ड्रॉयड सॉफ्टवेयर को क्या नाम दिया गया है जिस पर से कम्पनी ने 15 अक्टूबर 2014 को पर्दा उठाया? – “लॉलीपॉप” (“Lollipop”)

विस्तार: “लॉलीपॉप” को “एण्ड्रॉयड 5″ के नाम से भी जाना जायेगा। यह मोबाइल फोन में प्रयुक्त होने वाला गूगल का सबसे नया सॉफ्टवेयर होगा। कम्पनी का दावा है कि इसकी मदद से किसी भी एण्ड्रॉयड-आधारित डिवाइस की फोटो, गानों, एप्लीकेशन्स तथा हाल में की गई सर्च को किसी भी अन्य एण्ड्रॉयड-आधारित डिवाइस पर देखा जा सकेगा। इसके अलावा कम्पनी ने गूगल नेक्सस 6 (Nexus 6) की नई स्मार्टफोन रेंज को भी लाँच किया। इसको सितम्बर 2014 के दौरान एप्पल द्वारा जारी किए गए आईफोन-6 से मुकाबले में उतारा गया है।

4) West Indies cricket team pulled-out of its current tour to India on 17 October 2014 after no solution could be reached for the ongoing payment dispute. The payment dispute is between which two bodies associated with West Indies cricket? – The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and West Indies Players Association (WIPA)

Explanation: West Indies Players Association (WIPA) is association of West Indies cricketers led by Wavell Hinds. The payment dispute is related with new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed with the WICB. The West Indies’ players felt that CBA would result in around 75% reduction in their earnings. The West Indies team was to play the fifth ODI at Kolkata and a one-off T20 match at Cuttack followed by Tests at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. This chapter is an addition to the history of disputes that the West Indian players have had with their administrators. Ahead of the 1998 tour to South Africa too, the players had threatened to pull out of the tour. Later in July 2009 the team had called off Test series against Bangladesh and tour was completed with B-grade players sent by the WICB.

विस्तार: वेस्ट इंडीज़ प्लेयर्स एसोसिएशन वेस्ट इंडीज़ के क्रिकेटर वेवेल हाइंड्स (Wavell Hinds) के नेतृत्व वाला खिलाड़ियों का संगठन है। यह विवाद वेस्ट इंडीज़ क्रिकेट बोर्ड और WIPA के बीच हुए कलेक्टिव बारगेनिंग एग्रीमेण्ट (CBA) नामक हुए एक करार के बाद उपजा है। खिलाड़ियों का मानना है कि इस करार के कारण उनकी मैच की कमाई में 75% तक की कमी आयेगी। हालांकि वेस्ट इंडीज़ ने 17 अक्टूबर को हिमाचल प्रदेश के धर्मशाला में चौथा एकदिवसीय मैच तो खेला लेकिन इसके बाद कोलकाता में होने वाले अंतिम एकदिवसीय तथा इसके बाद होने वाली तीन मैचों की टेस्ट सीरीज़ में न खेलने का निर्णय लिया है। इसके कारण BCCI को भारी आर्थिक नुक्सान हो रहा है। उल्लेखनीय है कि वेस्ट इंडीज़ ने वर्ष 1998 में दक्षिण अफ्रीका दौरे से भी हटने की चेतावनी दी थी जबकि जुलाई 2009 में उसने बांग्लादेश के दौरे को रद्द कर दिया था। इसके बाद एक दियम दर्जे की टीम को WICB ने भेज कर उस बांग्लादेश दौरे को जैसे तैसे पूरा किया था।

Explanation : Alibaba, the world’s largest e-commerce company, presently processes roughly half of China’s e-commerce transactions through this financial unit. The company has been aggressively offering new financial services around Alipay, including a money market fund for consumers, a mobile payment app and even a new private bank that was recently approved by the Chinese government.

5) चीन की दिग्गज ई-कॉमर्स कम्पनी अलीबाबा (Alibaba) ने अलीपे (Alipay) फाइनेंशियल सर्विसेज के नाम से संचालित अपनी वित्तीय सेवा कम्पनी का नाम बदलने की घोषणा 16 अक्टूबर 2014 को की। इसका नया रखा गया नाम क्या है? – एण्ट फाइनेंशियल सर्विसेज (Ant Financial Services Group)

विस्तार: उल्लेखनीय है कि अलीबाबा विश्व की सबसे बड़ी ई-कॉमर्स कम्पनी है तथा अलीपे फाइनेंशियल सर्विसेज के माध्यम से ही ये अपने सौदों को क्रियान्वित कर रही थी जोकि चीन के लगभग आधे ई-कॉमर्स सौदों के बराबर है। अब कम्पनी इस सेवा को नए स्वरूप में पेश करने में लगी है तथा चीनी सरकार द्वारा इसे बैंक संचालित करने का लाइसेंस प्रदान किए जाने के बाद इसके काम का विस्तारीकरण भी चल रहा है।
