Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from Valmiki Basti in New Delhi this morning.
Later addressing a huge gathering at Rajpath, Mr Modi said Mahatma Gandhi's dream of clean India is still unfulfilled. He said the Father of the nation, gave the message quit India, Clean India.
The Prime Minister asked citizens to change their mindsets as cleaning is not only the responsibility of safai karamcharis.
He said the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is above politics and is purely due to people's love for the nation. Mr Modi called for starting the campaign on social media as well.
AIR correspondent reports, the ambitious drive includes sweeping, removal of garbage, debris and unauthorised encroachments from the roads, markets and residential places.
The campaign is aimed at making India a clean country by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
