Daily Current Affairs 14 to 16 August

1. AIADMK leader M Thnbidura today unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He is the first leader to hold the post for a second time. Earlier in 1985, also has the distinction of being elevated to the post.

2. Government is considering setting up of three greenfield airports in the Northeast — in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.



3. Two Indian-origin academicians have won global prizes in the field of mathematics with one of them being awarded the Fields Medal — known as the ‘Nobel Prize of mathematics’. Manjul Bhargava won the Fields Medal, while Subhash Khot won the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, awarded by the International Mathematical Union, at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 held in Seoul.

4. US actress Lauren Bacall, 89, died of a stroke Tuesday at her home in New York, according to multiple reports. Bacall starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946) and Key Largo (1948).


5. Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatagi headed committee has submitted its report on amendments in Lokpal search panel rules to the Centre, which were notified by the UPA government.

6. The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards to Shri Arun Jaitley, Dr. Karan Singh and Shri Sharad Yadav for the years 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively at a function organized by the Indian Parliamentary Group.


7. As per the original provisions under the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) Act, 2005 and Rules, 2006, exemption from Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) in the case of SEZ Developers and Units as also the exemption from Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT) for SEZ Developers were granted.

8. The draft Indian Standards for Organic Textiles (ISOT) has been developed in consultation with the organic stakeholders. The National Steering Committee (NSC) approved draft ISOT for implementation which has been forwarded to the Ministry of Textiles for their validation & comments.


9. India and Canada have been negotiating Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPA) which had been inconclusive even after the 14th round of negotiations held in April, 2010. The negotiations are presently in abeyance in view of review of the model text of BIPA.

10. While, there is no proposal for public private partnership to generate potable water and transport it to water deficit area like Rajasthan, presently the efforts are focused on scaling up the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) technology. Earlier, three LTTD plants have been successfully commissioned in the country, one each at Kavaratti, Minicoy, and Agatti islands of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.


11. The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill and Constitution (121st Amendment) Bill meant to replace the collegium system with a commission, where the executive too would have a say in selection of judges to the higher judiciary.

12. Decision taken by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in a devastated by the jihadi attacks and political strife torn country to give resignation in favor of his successor Haider al-Abadi was welcomed by America which has dubbed it an another major step towards uniting.

13. Reserve Bank will issue Rs 1,000 new bank notes under the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with the rupee mark 'R' in inset.

14. Rapid financial inclusion envisaged by the Government under the ‘Jan Dhan Yojana’ will lead to a decline in the usage of cash in India in line with developed countries, according to State Bank of India Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya.


15. SM Swathi, General Manager of Corporation Bank, has been appointed as Executive Director of Bharatiya Mahila Bank. She had assumed office on August 14.

16. China has inaugurated its second railway line in Tibet, built at a cost of $2.16 billion, close to Indian border in Sikkim, enhancing mobility of its military in the remote and strategic Himalayan region.


17. According to EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos, the European Union has plans to buy up stocks of fruit and vegetables hit by a Russian ban on the bloc’s agricultural products


18. Coca-Cola has announced it will pay $2.15 billion for a 16.7 per cent stake in Monster Beverage, cementing a distribution-based link between the two that had added significantly to Coke’s profits.

19. In a bid to improve the plight of forgotten national sportstars living in penury, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs is set to implement various welfare schemes in the coming months.

20. Expressing the government’s resolve to move towards the goal of ‘Digital India’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the need for using information technology to improve governance and spread education and medical facilities.
