1. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is to lay the foundation of a Port- Based Multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Sheva, Navi Mumbai on Saturday, August 16, 2014. 
=> This industrial infrastructure project is to be established on 277 hectares with a total Public and Private investment of about 4,000 Crore rupees. This is being planned as a Self-Sustainable Integrated Development Project having a potential of generating over 1.5 lakh direct and indirect jobs.

2. The RBI said that it will transfer the surplus amount of Rs. 52,679 crore to the Government. The year before, the central bank said that it had transferred Rs. 33,010 crore to the Government.



3. The 18th BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) ministerial meeting on climate change, which concluded on Friday in New Delhi, brought to the fore the crucial question of responsibilities of the developed nations and the controversial issue of payment of compensation for climate-related damages of $100 billion a year by 2020.


4. The portrait of Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea, has been removed from a new banknote, a South Korean news report said on Monday. The new 5,000-won note, the country’s highest denomination–instead shows Kim’s childhood home, the Chosun Ilbo daily reported.

5. Eighteen suspects who participated in last month’s deadly terrorist attack that killed nearly 100 people in the restive Xinjiang province bordering Pakistan have surrendered to the police following a campaign asking the public to give tip-offs about those involved.


6. The 44-day-long Amarnath Yatra to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas ended Sunday, with nearly four lakh pilgrims paying obeisance to the ice-Shivlingam this year.

8. A 42-year-old man was found dead at the residence of former Union minister and Congress leader Kumari Selja in Sunehri Bagh here this morning, police said.

9. Syria’s state-run news agency is reporting that President Bashar Assad has reappointed premier Wael al-Halqi to form a new government.


10 Presidential hopeful and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to become Turkey’s first elected President. Mr. Erdogan, head of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led Sunday’s presidential polls with 51.8%  of votes.

11. The Odisha government has said the affected population in the flood rose to 3 million as floodwater entered new areas in the State. Nearly half a million population remained surrounded by vast sheets of water in 460 villages, where over a lakh were desperately dependent on cooked food supplied by government.


12. Keen to restore investor confidence, the finance ministry is likely to whittle down the scope of the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAARs) so that genuine tax planning isn’t impacted by these dreaded rules.

13. The Maharashtra State Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has sent a proposal to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct chemical conservation of the Mumbai's World Heritage monument, the Gateway of India. The 90-year-old monument was completed in 1924 to commemorate the visit of Britain’s King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911.

14. The Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation tomorrow two hydel power projects in Leh and Kargil in Jammu & Kashmir .
=> These projects are the 44 MW Chutak hydroelectric project in Kargil district
=>  the 45 MW Nimoo Bazgo project in Leh district.
The Prime Minister would also lay foundation stone for the first power transmission line from Leh to Kargil and Kargil to Srinagar.

15. As per the order dated 27.02.2012 of Hon’ble Supreme Court, the Ken-Betwa Link Project, benefiting Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, has been taken up for the implementation. The estimated cost of the Phase-I and Phase-II of the Ken-Betwa Link project is Rs.9393 Crore (2008 price level) and Rs.2283 Crore (2012-13 price level) respectively.

16. Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons Ltd, has been conferred the 18th MMA Amalgamations Business Leadership Award at a function in Chennai on Tuesday.

17. The UN has named 3 experts as members of an independent inquiry commission that will probe possible human rights violations and war crimes committed, particularly in the Gaza Strip, during the recent conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

18. Oscar Winning veteran actor Robin Williams, 63, was found dead, Police has said. The apparent cause of the death was suicide, authorities said yesterday.

19. India today successfully conducted trials of its indigenously developed surface-to-air ’Akash’ missile, which has a strike range of 25 kms, as part of a user trial by the Air Force from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur.

20. In the last three years, the US has taken over Russia as the largest supplier of weapon systems to India. In the last three years, India has bought several equipment from the US including the C130J Super Hercules aircraft, Harpoon anti-submarine missiles and the C-17 Heavylift transport aircraft.

21. Japanese scientists claim to have developed the world’s fastest camera — a photo-device with a frame interval of 4.4 trillion frames per second.


22. Scientists have developed a novel molecule that can cause cancer cells to self-destruct by ferrying sodium and chloride ions into the tumour cells. The advance could lead to new anticancer drugs while also benefiting patients with cystic fibrosis.


23. The Government has given 3 month extension to Air India chief Rohit Nandan and asked competent authority to complete the selection process of the new incumbent in the meantime.

24. Member of India’s first Lok Sabha Reshamlal Jangde died due to age-related ailments at a local hospital on Monday morning. He was 89.
