1. Sania Mirza of India and Brazilian Bruno Soares won the U.S. Open mixed doubles title. Top-seeded Mirza and Soares won 6-1 2-6 11-9, sealing the match tiebreak when Spears sent a backhand volley long at a sun-drenched Arthur Ashe Stadium.

2. Indian capital markets may be riding high on positive investor sentiments, but the latest report by World Economic Forum (WEF) shows that the country has plunged 35 places to 62nd rank in terms of effective regulation of the stock exchanges.

3. Playing down on coal shortages at some power stations, Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal today said the government in 100 days had slogged the system to produce nearly 22 per cent more electricity and is on track to provide 24x7 power to all in five years.

4. The asset base of the mutual fund industry rose by more than Rs. 6,300 crore to Rs. 10.12 lakh crore in August boosted by inflows in equity funds. The rise in AUM during August was primarily due to inflows in equity funds, which was eventually helped by a strong stock market.

6. Less than two per cent of the jails in the country are reserved for women, housing 18 per cent of the total female prisoners, according to latest data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).


=> Only 20 out of 1,394 jails in the country are exclusively reserved for women and 3,200 out of the overall 16,951 female prisoners of the country are serving their terms in such prisons.

7. To pave the way for the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Finance Ministry is likely to clear payment of up to ₹12,000 crore to States as compensation for phasing out Central Sales Tax (CST). The Government plans to move this proposal during the Winter Session of Parliament. 

8. Declaring the Jammu and Kashmir floods as “national level disaster”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs. 1,000 crore as special assistance for rehabilitation, while sharing the pain and anguish of the people of the State.

9. Nearly 20,000 couples have been allowed to have a second child in Beijing under China’s controversial One Child Policy, which was recently modified to meet demographic challenges. So far 21,249 couples have filed birth applications of which 19,363 were granted permission for the second child in the Chinese capital, Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning said. 

10. The elusive ‘God particle’ discovered by scientists in 2012 has the potential to destroy the universe, famed British physicist Stephen Hawking has warned. According to Hawking, 72, at very high energy levels the Higgs boson, which gives shape and size to everything that exists, could become unstable. 

11. The country's largest lender State Bank of India Monday said it is planning to launch contact-less debit cards which would enable customers to carry out some transactions without entering the pin number.
