1) Which bank claimed first spot in the mobile banking segment in the country, as reported in the latest data released by the RBI on 15 September 2014? – State Bank of India (SBI)

Explanation: SBI’s total number of mobile banking users stood at 1.15 crore. ICICI Bank stood second with 19.5 lakh users and was followed by Axis Bank (13.6 lakh), Yes Bank (4.3 lakh) and HDFC Bank (3.5 lakh). The number of SBI’s mobile banking users is larger than the mobile banking customer base of large banks in the West. Only a couple of Chinese banks have more mobile banking customers. SBI’s emergence as country’s largest mobile banking operator came as a surprise as traditionally new generation private banks and foreign banks have been the early adopters of alternative platforms like mobile banking.

2) The WPI-based inflation during August 2014 came down to the lowest levels during last 5 years. What was the inflation level recorded during the month, as disclosed in the data released by the Union Govt.? – 3.74%
Explanation: The inflation based on wholesale price index (WPI) of 3.74% recorded during August 2014 was the lowest since October 2009, when it stood at 1.8%. India has always been comfortable when WPI-based inflation is at 4% or less. This low level of WPI-based inflation is partly attributed to a statistical base effect and below-$100 global crude oil prices. During July 2014 this rate stood at 5.19%.

3) The Union Cabinet on 15 September 2014 gave its approval to a new mission to address the gaps in health services through promotion of ancient and traditional systems of medicine like Ayurved, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy. What is the name of this mission? – National AYUSH Mission (NAM)
Explanation: The proposed Mission will address the gaps in health services through supporting the efforts of State and Union Territory Governments for providing AYUSH health services/education in the country, particularly in vulnerable and far-flung areas. The term AYUSH has been used for clubbing various traditional and ancient medicine systems like Ayurved, Siddha, Unani, Naturopathy and Homeopathy. NAM aims to improve AYUSH-based education, better access to AYUSH services through increase in the number of AYUSH hospitals and dispensaries, sustained availability of quality raw material for AYUSH systems of medicine and improving the quality of AYUSH-based drugs.

4) India lost by 2-3 to Serbia in the World Group play-off tie after India lost the deciding final tie on 15 September 2014 at Bangalore. With this Serbia reclaimed its place in the elite World Group while India would has to again fight it out in Asia/Oceania zone in the 2015 season. In which year India last made it to Davis Cup’s World Group? – In 2011
Explanation: India had made it to the World Group last time in 2011, but ironically it lost to Serbia in the very first round that year. On 15 September India’s Yuki Bhambri lost easily to Serbia’s Filip Karjinovic by 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The deciding rubber was needed as India made a strong comeback by winning two continuous matches after losing the first two matches in the tie.

5) Which combination scored victory in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union polls (JNUSU) held on 14 September 2014 by bagging all the top four positions? – All India Students’ Association (AISA)
Explanation: AlSA is the left-backed combine which won all the 4 positions at stake including the President’s post, for the second consecutive year. President’s post was won by AISA’s Ashutosh Kumar, Anant Prakash won Vice Presidential post. AISA’s Chintu Kumari claimed the post of General Secretary while Shafqat Hussain Butt was elected as the Joint Secretary.

6) Which north-eastern capital city was named as a permanent venue for the bi-annual Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) by the Films Division on 15 September 2014? – Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram
Explanation: According to the announcement made by Films Division, there will be two permanent venues for the MIFF. Every year MIFF will be organised at four venues and two among these will be permanent venues. Aizawl will be one such permanent venue. Films Division, which comes under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, is organising the week-long MIFF 2014 at Aizawl which was inaugurated on 15 September.
